Film Review: Goodnight Mommy

In an idyllic house in the Austrian countryside—all clean lines, open spaces and modernist furniture—twin boys Lukas and Elias (first-time actors Lukas and Elias Schwarz) await the return of their television-presenter mother, who’s left her children to enjoy the long summer days while she goes off to get some plastic surgery done. When the unnamed Mother (Susanne Wuest) comes back, it’s not just her face, swaddled in bandages, that’s different. She’s harsher, quicker to anger and slower to sing them lullabies and play games. Like a monumentally disturbing episode of “Scooby Doo” (switch out curmudgeonly amusement-park owners and Scooby Snacks with dead cats and fish tanks full of beetles), the industrious brothers set out to uncover the true identity of the woman, or maybe the thing, that claims to be their mother.
